Setting up the flight controller

Note - You must download the software from online. Instructions for downloading the software and installing drivers may be found below. It may be necessary to be logged into the computer as an administrator or the IT department may need to install the software. Software and drivers must be installed or it will not work.

Initial Landing Page

TO BEGIN:

• Need a battery and a transmitter. Power up drone with battery and turn on the transmitter.

• Plug micro-usb into the orange LED and the computer.

• Open the DJI NAZAM Assistant 2.4 Software.

• The drone and computer should connect within a few seconds. If they do not connect, you cannot hit SKIP and hope for connectivity. If the SKIP line shows up, the drone and the computer are NOT communicating and they MUST be communicating in order to the drone to be set up.

• If connectivity is not occurring, it may be necessary to reload the drivers and/or the software.

• Once connectivity is established, you may get the Announcements page. You may need to download the latest firmware. Hit refresh and any firmware that needs to be updated will be listed.

Note - If the drone is powered up for a few minutes while remaining idle, the motors may start to beep. Nothing is wrong; they are just idle.

PLEASE NOTE - The NAZA software includes really good and essential guides to help you understand the flight controller so it is critical that you read all left panels as you go along and hover over each diagram to get the full benefit of the information programmed into the left panel.

On the VIEW Page - When you move the control sticks, the channel monitors will show movement on the slide indicators. This indicates everything is talking. If there is no movement, they are not talking. The flashing blue light in the bottom right corner also indicates that the drone and the computer are communicating.

On the BASIC page, choose subtab Aircraft. Ensure that you have chosen the QuadRotor X (hover over the pictures).

Motor test - Choose the center button that says Motor Test. Follow the onscreen instructions. May need to tap a few times to get motion. Make sure that the direction of motor rotation matches the motor diagram on the screen. If the motor is spinning the wrong direction, then reverse any two of the three motor to ESC wires and the motor will reverse spin. Go in sequence from motor 1 to motor 4. Hit close once all are done.

Note - If the motor test is not working with the computer after the rest of configuration is done, you can power up the drone and check direction of spin using the transmitter.

GPS Distances - Choose BASIC subtab Mounting and plug in distances along X, Y, Z axes for telling the drone where the top of the GPS is relative to the NAZA flight controller after you have measured these distances in cm. Follow the online instructions. The screen shot shows the values that should be used if the GPS is mounted per instructions. Plug the number in and hit Enter key.

Choose BASIC subtab RC

  1. Make sure you are D-Bus and all of the Command Sticks should read NORM (for normal). Follow the screen shots/ onscreen instructions both provided here and what you see if you hover over the START button for the calibration.

  2. Hit the START button to perform a Command Sticks Calibration. Move both sticks into all four corners and then hit FINISH (the START button turned into the FINISH button).

  3. Receiver Advanced Protection should be ON.

  4. Under Control Mode Switch there are five boxes. These are designated to correspond with the upper right switch on the remote. On the remote control the switch all the way up should blue out the GPS block on the screen and the U Slider will be under GPS. If the right switch is then toggled to center, it should move the blue out and slider to Atti Position and if toggled all the way down, it should stay in place at the Atti Position.

  5. Power the transmitter OFF and Failsafe should blue out and U slider should move to underneath the Failsafe. If it doesn’t do that, contact OnPoynt for assistance so that you don’t lose your drone when you go out to fly.

  6. Power transmitter back on.

  • Under BASIC sub-tab Gain, it is recommended that you leave the default settings in place. Once you are familiar with the drone and if you are struggling with the responsiveness of the aircraft, you can adjust the Gain but it is recommended that you read up on this before making any adjustments.

  • Go to ADVANCED tab and sub-tab Motor. Leave idle speed at RECOMMENDED position and the Cut Off Type should be Intelligent.

  • Choose Subtab F/S (Failsafe). Recommend GoHome and Landing button (this will avoid the aircraft landing anywhere and will instead force it home if it goes into failsafe).

  • Choose subtab IOC (Intelligent Orientation Control). Make sure the upper left box is checked as ON. Now toggle the left three position switches and the X2 slider should move from OFF to Course Lock to Home Lock with associated bluing. Toggle the left switch all the way up.

  • Go to the subtab Gimbal. Ensure that OFF is clicked.

  • Go to subtab H3/4-3D and do nothing.

  • Go to subtab Voltage. Make sure Protection is ON. Under Battery, it should automatically identify and recognize the battery you are using (3S LiPo).

  • Under First Level Protection, make sure that No Load is 11.6 V, Loss is 0.30 V and Loaded should be 11.30 V.

Note - When these levels are hit by the battery during drone flight, the LED will flash Red, indicating to the pilot that it is time to start bringing back the drone for a battery change.

  • Under Second Level Protection, make sure that No Load is 11.1 V, Loss is 0.30V and Loaded is 10.80 V.

Note - If these levels are hit, the aircraft will start to descend. Loss of battery voltage will not invoke failsafe; the drone will simply descend and land.

Advanced Subtab Voltage

  • Go to subtab Limits. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT SCREEN (because the default settings would put you flying illegally).

    • Recommended Max height is 30 M (about 100 ft) and the Max Radius is 50 m (about 150 ft). This creates an area of flight about the size of a football field. It is illegal to fly your drone above an altitude of 400 ft (128 m) or beyond field of vision.

Advanced Subtab Limits

  • Go to TOOLS tab. Click the Check IMU status. If no calibration is needed, move to the next tab. If calibration is needed, then press the Basic Cali button and follow onscreen instructions.

  • Go to UPGRADE tab. If it needs a firmware update, it will tell you. Otherwise, you do not need it. You should not have to do anything here but you may need to reflash the firmware after a hard landing by choosing blue link Latest version and it will start the firmware update.

Note - If you are having trouble configuring or using the drone, it may be necessary to reflash the firmware. * No action necessary for INFORMATION tab. The FC is now configured and the drone assembly can be finished.
